Last week, Source One’s Data Scientist, James Patounas presented to students and professors of La Salle University’s Business Systems and Analytics Club on the topic of predictive analytics and data science. The club’s mission is to prepare students for the business world, regularly hosting guest speaking and networking events to allow students to see how their curriculum applies in different business functions. Reinforcing this mission, Patounas shared with students how data science supports procurement and strategic sourcing departments.

Patounas explained to students his role in allowing Source One to provide innovative spend management and cost reduction solutions for clients. Comparing purchasing models, Patounas walked students through the different ways data supports the entire strategic sourcing process, from baseline reporting and spend analyses through contract negotiations. Throughout the presentation, both students and faculty were interested in learning more about the tools Patounas utilizes, such as Qlik Sense and Linux/ Bash Scripting. In addition, they were interested in how the data is gathered and how it helps Source One provide insights into purchasing decisions and category management.

In addition to lending students an inside look at the roles and responsibilities of a data scientist in procurement, Patounas also shared his personal recommendations on learning more about programming and his advice for students who will soon be looking for similar roles post - graduation. This is the second semester in a row Source One has had the pleasure of speaking to students at La Salle University, and we look forward to engaging students in the future!
