Over the course of its existence, Netflix has risen from a bit player in the world of DVD rentals to become a veritable industry behemoth. Though analysts once scoffed at the company's business model, it has become a top destination on the Web to stream films and television shows. This week, the company announced it has expanded its deal with Fox to bring additional content for its users.
According to company executives, Netflix customers will now be able to watch Fox shows like "Glee" after the company orchestrated a deal with the broadcast network that effectively expands its distribution deal. Glee is one of Fox's biggest hits and analysts assert Netflix has been working to bring it to its "Watch Instantly" service for some time.
Per terms of the new deal, Netflix users will also be able to stream other Fox shows, including the cult hit "Sons of Anarchy." Now, Netflix's subscriber base - which totals more than 12 million users - will have more television and film choices to watch. When Netflix first launched its Watch Instantly service, there were hardly any offerings, but it has expanded quickly and has helped elevate the company into a media titan.
"In a rapidly changing world of windows and technology, this deal reflects a long-standing relationship between Netflix and Fox and is an example of how we can work together creatively," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. "We believe the Fox deal, which brings some of the studio's great TV franchises and a library of both contemporary and classic movies to the growing percentage of Netflix members who are watching instantly, is a win all around."
