Boeing CEO talks supply chain problems in interview Jim McNerney, the chief executive of aeronautics giant Boeing, has spent the past few years grappling with repeated supply chain disruptions that have delayed the delivery of the company's "Dreamliner" plane. McNerney recently said the company's supply chain may have been extended too far and that he's working to streamline the process to avoid further inefficiencies in the future.

"The 787 was a bridge too far on a horizontal supply chain across too many time zones with too much engineering delegated to others," he affirmed in an interview with CNBC Wednesday. Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is the first composite-plastic airliner and was heralded as a game-changer when Boeing first started taking orders for it; however, the plane is more than three years behind schedule and some airlines have canceled their orders, citing the delays.

McNerney asserted that the company needs "to get our feet underneath us as we go forward on that airplane and on subsequent developments." After seemingly endless problems with new materials, parts shortages and redesign work, the first shipment of the planes will be delivered by the second half of this year, he said.

"We have a few more things to go, and God willing, we'll be there," he declared.
