Two law firms eye possible mergerA Pennsylvania law firm is considering a merger with a Texas company.

Pittsburgh-based Reed Smith and Dallas-based Thompson & Knight both confirmed to the Pittsburgh Business Times that a merger between the two companies is a possibility. Reed Smith employs 1,500 lawyers, 150 of whom are in Philadelphia, while Thompson & Knight has about 350 lawyers who focus on the energy industry, including oil and gas. Thompson & Knight has five offices throughout Texas. Reed Smith has 22 offices across the US, Europe, the Middle East and Asia - but none in Texas.

"We are in preliminary merger discussions with Texas-based Thompson & Knight," Reed Smith Managing Partner Greg Jordan told the paper. "The discussions are preliminary and no final agreement or partner vote has been reached or taken."

"In today's legal environment, Thompson & Knight's historical presence in Texas and our outstanding energy expertise are sought after by firms," added Becky Jackson, chief client services officer at Thompson & Knight. "For several years, we have regularly received inquiries regarding possible mergers. We have had preliminary conversations with Reed Smith, and they are obviously a great firm, but it is premature to characterize these discussions in any detail."
