The White House voiced its support for a bill promoting energy efficiency through LEED procurement and other energy saving strategies, according to The Hill.
The bill, known as S. 1392, would not only improve current federal programs aimed at energy efficiency but also support initiatives such as decreasing wasted energy using building codes and efficiency programs for industries.
As for manufacturing's role in energy efficiency, the bill hopes to enhance the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers through investing in the research and development of technological innovations. These include the Department of Energy's Clean Energy Manufacturing Initiative for increasing production of clean energy products as well as boosting energy productivity. This program also hopes to offer training for manufacturers to shrink the skills gap needed to meet those goals.
USDA pays producers for biofuels
To promote the White House's energy efficiency mission to better the energy independence of the U.S. through sustainable sourcing, biofuel production is being bolstered through the United States Department of Agriculture.
"Producing advanced biofuels is a major component of the drive to take control of America's energy future by developing domestic, renewable energy sources," said, Doug O'Brien, USDA Rural Development acting under secretary. "These payments represent the Obama Administration's commitment to support an 'all-of-the-above' energy strategy."
As a source of alternative energy, advanced biofuels are made using biomass from waste such as crop residue and food and yard waste as well as materials such as vegetable oil and animal fat. The USDA's Advanced Biofuel Payment Program aims to help the production of biofuels by giving payments to producers based on the output they have. This program can also help support green jobs.
"Job seekers in rural America need new and expanded investments in renewable energy, biofuel and bio-based product manufacturing – all of which can help create jobs in rural areas," said O'Brien.
