Intern Corner Summer 2017 Interns
This summer the Strategic Sourceror kicked off its Intern Corner (Intern Corner - Summer 2016 Internship Program Introduction), profiling students and young professionals participating in Source One’s Analyst Internship Program. This fall Source One welcomes new interns to its Chicago and Willow Grove office. Continuing the Intern Corner series, we’ll hear from our fall analyst interns as they share their individual goals and experiences contributing to real-world procurement initiatives.

The internship program at Source One provides young professionals with supply management experience in a wide range of industries. Interns have the opportunity to contribute to projects from start to finish and witness how their work plays a role in achieving the end result for clients. At Source One, interns can gain r,eal world, hands-on experience that teaches important skills that can be utilized throughout their career in supply chain management and consulting. Exposure to strategic sourcing processes, client services, marketing, business development and procurement consulting practices allow interns to understand Source One's unique processes and operations. As members of the team at Source One, interns have the opportunity to participate in process training sessions, corporate social responsibility initiatives, and other team building events.

Read the introductions to the interns joining the Source One team for the summer below, and check back in these next few weeks to see their individual contributions to The Strategic Sourceror's Intern Corner.

My name is Samantha Hoy and I am a 22-year old from State College, Pennsylvania. In August, I will be graduating from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. Originally, I went to Penn State with the intention of majoring in Graphic Design, but as I took more business classes, specifically in Supply Chain, I realized I wanted to have a career in the business world. As my business classes progressed, I became more attracted to the idea of Supply Chain Management, especially in regards to procurement and sourcing.

When I found an internship opportunity at Source One, I felt like it was the perfect opportunity that closely aligned with my career goals. Since my first day at Source One, I have felt like part of the team and I can reach out to any of my coworkers for assistance. My first few assignments with the company have included data collection, data cleansing, auditing baseline reports, and creating a facilities management presentation.

Before starting at Source One, I had eight years of restaurant management experience under my belt. I was very excited to be in a position that is much more related to my major, where I am able to apply the concepts I was learning in my classes. One of my main goals for my summer with this company is to gain as much knowledge about the procurement and strategic sourcing processes as I can, as well as enhance my knowledge in the various industries that Source One works with. Everyone at Source One has been very welcoming and friendly, and they always communicate their instructions and expectations for projects clearly. I can’t wait to see what else this summer has in store!

My name is Noah Weiner and I am a Data Science Intern at Source One’s main office in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. I am 21 years old and I come from the Somerton neighborhood located in Northeast Philadelphia. As of right now I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon learning about Source One, I was excited to hear that they were expanding their technology assets to ultimately maintain their outstanding reputation as a premier tech-enabled sourcing firm. I have applicable experience in time-intensive software engineering; specifically related to front-end development, project management, and utilization of databases. My biggest hope is that my knowledge in these practices will make the difference between completed products that are only satisfactory and those that beat expectations and save valuable time.

Although my research and educational interests pertain to Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering, hence my selection in college majors, there exists immense relevance in my work at Source One. For example, I will be taking a look practices related to regular expressions and natural language processing. I will also be overseeing the development of websites that will offer clients the ability to engage in efficient transactions and communication with one another. My role at Source One assumes numerous responsibilities, so I am really excited to see how the company benefits from its investment in data science!

Lastly, it would be a shame to not mention the hospitality and cohesiveness of the current employees—not to mention their sense of humor, something I value greatly.  With all of this being said, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the near future!

My name is Ashley John, and I am a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering and a minor in Economics. I am originally from Lansdale, Pennsylvania, close to Source One’s Willow Grove headquarters.  I began my college career certain that I wanted to major in Industrial Engineering. Once I started taking classes at Pitt, however, I realized just how broad the career landscape is for graduating engineers. From chemical plants, to banks, to airports, engineers have a transferable problem-solving skillset that can be applied nearly anywhere. With my mind blown by the possibilities, I realized that I wanted my work experiences to help me gain exposure to many industries at once, and the Analyst Intern position at Source One provides exactly that type of opportunity.

An internship at Source One is a one of a kind opportunity to gain an understanding of a wide array of industries all while working with a close knit, friendly group of people.

During my first month at Source One, I have applied many of the courses from my Industrial Engineering degree, but I have also realized how much more there is to learn. This summer, I will be focusing a portion of my time on data science and analytics at Source One. I am interested in this growing field, and I am excited to learn more about how it is being applied internally and externally in the procurement field. My favorite part of my internship so far is that every day brings a different task, from drafting RFPs, to supplier research, to data analysis.

My career goals after this internship are to continue to apply my quantitative and leadership skills in an analytical position. Sourcing is at the core of any business operations, so I know that even if I do not remain directly in sourcing for the remainder of my career, the skills I learn this summer will be transferable. I am thankful for Source One for providing this enriching internship and excited to see what the rest of the summer has in store!
