After a very observant Facebook post by one of my esteemed colleagues regarding the addition of bacon to just about anything and how it provides such an obvious improvement I got to thinking …..what isn’t better with bacon in it, on it, or with it?  Even better though, can bacon be the answer to our economic and political woes?

In Flintshire County, in the United Kingdom it appears that bacon butties may at least solve a dispute among council members regarding grievances over a short recess between meetings and other site visit activities not allowing for a meal break.  Councilors were asked to bring their own sandwiches to eat on a short 10 minute break, apparently this doesn’t happen often and is an astonishing insult.  Chairwoman Alison Halford emailed authority leader Arnold Woolley and suggested that committee members be provided bacon sandwiches out of his pocket in an effort to resolve the upset caused by the request.  Unfortunately I do not have a follow up response to report at this time as the matter was apparently resolved privately, but I have no doubt that if the authority leader submits to this request, all will be well.  Why?  Because how could bacon NOT resolve the issue?!

(For those who may not have the ability to consume pork products, turkey bacon is a comparable substitute.  I would also recommend low sodium products if you have health concerns, it’s just as good as the fully salted version.)

  2. Carb cravings are hard to control. It is a big problem who is trying to control a healthy diet in America. With diabetes, it becomes much worse. Where do these cravings come from and what can we do about them? Carbohydrates stimulate the release of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. The taste of sugar releases endorphins that calm and relax us. Refined carbohydrates are addictive
sugar works the addiction and reward pathways in the brain in much the same way as many illegal drugs. Sugar is basically a socially acceptable, legal, recreational drug, with deadly consequences — and like with any drug addiction, you have to have a flexible but structured plan to beat it.
Below are some suggestion for control over sugar addiction and card cravings.
    1. • Have some substitutes handy — when sugar craving hits, grab a stick of gum, or a piece of fruit, or some trail mix. Always have healthy snacks available.
    2. • Distract yourself by doing something — like taking a walk or involving yourself in an engrossing task.
    3. • Avoid cravings in the first place — don’t let yourself get too hungry. Always eat a good breakfast, including some protein. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Perhaps divide lunch in two parts, and save one part for a mid-afternoon snack.
    4. • Try to have some protein and/or fat with each meal. Make sure the carbs you do eat have a lot of fiber, so they don’t absorb too fast.
    5. • Reduce stress –When we’re stressed the adrenal glands secrete adrenaline and depletes the body’s energy reserves. The result is lack of energy, fatigue, and cravings for sweets or caffeine to restore our energy.

  3. If you have diabetes, then taking care of eye vision is very important. People who have diabetes, have higher risks of eye problem that can cause permanent vision loss if not treated.
Some of the eye complications that can accompany diabetes include cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye), glaucoma (an increase in pressure within the eye), and the most common eye complication, retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels in the retina, the membrane at the back of the eye).

You can prevent this by regular eye exams, good blood glucose control and other measures both medical and life style related.
